It was an interesting discussion.
I asked a CDO how he is making himself obsolete in his current role / a.k.a “grow larger than the role.”
He was shocked and asked me why he would do that?
Growth is scary. It takes you outside your comfort zone. Especially when you focus on building your second line rapidly, it is easy to wonder – “what happens to me?”
In fact, clinging to a role is what you must be worried about. If anyone can do what you have been doing for a long time, it is easy to replace you.
Growth need not be just moving out of your current role. It also means expanding your current set of responsibilities and accountabilities.
The problem is, many leaders do not know how to do that.
Role-expansion needs operating without boundaries (not beyond, not outside-the-box) – it is a “boxless” strategy – where you try to create an impact across the company, without much regard to who is owning the business process.
You still may need to work through business/functional leaders, but you think freely across the entire business-value-chain.
